Getting Started

Volleyball practice plans are quite useful for new coaches as well as established coaches. These plans help coaches prioritize the needs of their team as well as stay on track to meet yearly goals.

When creating volleyball practice plans, coaches should keep in mind their seasonal goals as well as what immediate needs their team has. If, for instance, a team is strong on defense but consistently has holes in its offense, the coach may want to tailor the practice plan to focus on offensive strategy, including offensive drills and teaching new offensive plays for competition.

When coaching volleyball, it is important to share practice plans with assistant coaches and other interested parties. These plans should show stakeholders what information is being covered and how the coach is making use of their time. It also helps in the event of an emergency when an assistant needs to take over the practice to ensure continuity.

Components of Volleyball Practice Plans

Practice plans can take many different forms. Common volleyball practice plans start by listing the date, the length of the practice, and two to three goals for the day. These goals should be achievable and specific, such as “Build understanding about the importance of proper stretching after practice.” By writing out specific goals, coaches can tailor their practice plans to their needs.

After the goals, volleyball practice plans should lay out the structure of the practice, including the order of events and the length of time spent on each event. Practice plans should also take into account the rest and drink breaks athletes need to perform at their best.

For example, a coach might make this practice plan for an hour-long practice: Minutes 1-10, Warm-up and light stretching; Minutes 11-15, Discussion of upcoming game and brief description of opponent; Minutes 16-25, passing and hitting volleyball drills; Minutes 26-28, Water break; Minutes 29-45, Instruction on new offensive formation and practice; Minutes 46-48, Water break; Minutes 49-55, Conditioning; Minutes 56-60, Cool down and stretching.

Keeping a Copy of your Practice Plan for History

There are several reasons why keeping volleyball practice plans are a good idea. First, keeping a record of what was covered in each practice makes it easier to plan the next year’s season. Being able to look back and see how fast certain concepts were covered will give coaches a leg up on their seasonal planning and setting realistic yearly goals.

Second, practice plans are important historical documents in the event of a dispute or legal issue. If a coach can produce a practice plan and show what material was covered during a specific practice or throughout a period of time, they will be more able to clear up any confusion and have adequate legal protection.

Finally, historical practice plans can help other coaches in your program or league develop their own plans and see if their teams are on track for success. By sharing information and creating a collaborative environment, coaches can maximize their teams’ performances and build high-performing, successful athletes.
