Volleyball drills are the foundation for any practice, because they build skills, teach athletes how to work and play as a team, and build strength and technique for competition. So why should a coach focus on volleyball drills during practice?

Volleyball drills teach athletes several things that do not relate directly to the sport they are learning. Aside from teaching athletes good technique, drills teach athletes patience, attention to detail, dedication to the sport, and respect for authority. Drills also help athletes understand the need for practice and allows them to work on areas needing improvement.

How Drills Build Volleyball Skills

Volleyball drills are the best way for athletes to cement new skills in their repertoire and brush up on old skills. Drills provide athletes with a chance to isolate a movement and focus on each part of it, from the wrist flick to the planting of the feet to the communication with teammates. Because drills are often repetitive, athletes can focus on each of these aspects in turn and improve them before bringing everything together in competition.

Fitting Drills into Practice

Drills should make up a large part of each practice. Coaches need to include several elements during each practice, including a warm-up, skills instruction, and drills. Drills should be included in the middle of practice and should be a major part of each day.

Coaches can include drills either before or after skills instruction. Some coaches prefer to have athletes review their current skills by practicing drills before teaching anything new. Other coaches, however, prefer to teach new skills and include drills to let athletes practice immediately. Either way, coaches need to integrate their skills and drills practices.

How to Make Drills Successful

Every coach wants to know what makes a volleyball drill successful. Success comes from repetition, ease of the activity, and interactivity. Volleyball drills should be somewhat repetitive. Coaches need to allow athletes the time to practice a skill over and over, something that comes usually from repetition.

Also, successful drills are on par with the athletes’ skill level. Drills should not be so difficult that athletes spend their time and energy remembering the drill instead of working on the details of their technique. Finally, successful volleyball practice drills let athletes interact, allowing them to build relationships with each other and make a cohesive team.

Choosing the Right Drill

Coaches choosing volleyball drills should look for activities that mimic the motions athletes will perform during competition. If the coach wants athletes to improve their connection with teammates on the court, they should choose a drill that involves communication, such as team passing drills that require athletes to call who will receive the ball.

Coaches should also ensure that they pick drills that challenge all players. Drills should be multifaceted to allow for different skill levels. Because youth volleyball often encompasses a wide range of talent, drills need to be adaptable. Coaches should strive for drills that can be made more difficult through additional movements or the use of teammates as blockers.
