Coaches need to plan ahead to ensure that their responsibilities are covered and that they are fulfilling their jobs to their family as well as to their sport. Coaches must also juggle working with administrators and getting ready for the season, making them busy individuals!

Planning for the Year

Coaching volleyball is a responsibility throughout the year, not just during the season. During the off times, coaches should work to review the previous season’s goals, achievement rates, problems, and successes to determine what to change and what to maintain for the coming year.

When planning for the year, those coaching volleyball should keep in mind that every team is different. Because the dynamic of the team comes from its individual players, each year will be unique. Coaches should take that into account before planning for a season with the previous year’s team.

Working with Administrators

Every coach has some sort of administration to work with, but not all do it effectively. Coaching volleyball requires a sort of finesse, especially when liaising with stakeholders. The coach and the administration should sit down before the season to go over everyone goals and expectations. By communicating honestly and frequently, coaches and administrators can avoid misunderstandings and confusion.

Coaches should be proactive when working with administrators. If there is something going on that requires additional discussion or that needs administrative support, coaches should seek out their contacts in the administration. While administrators also need to go to coaches to see if they need help, coaches should not wait for this if there is a serious issue requiring attention.

Avoiding Burnout

Coaching volleyball is a big commitment, and coaches who do not learn to balance find themselves burnt out fairly quickly. New coaches especially experience this situation because of their eagerness to be successful and impart their knowledge on athletes. Coaches can avoid this scenario by making time for themselves and their family.

Though coaching is demanding on one’s time, coaches should sit down with their family before the season begins to explain the time commitment they will have and how it will affect the family. The coach can suggest ways for the family to get involved and set rules for their own participation in the sport. When everyone understands where the coach is and why, there are fewer domestic problems as a result.

Is Volleyball Coaching Right For You?

It is not unusual for those coaching volleyball to experience burnout. Coaches of all experience levels struggle with making time for family while planning volleyball practices and going to games. Coaches should start working on the season early so they are prepared for the demands on their time. This will also allow coaches time to prepare for meetings with administrators, with whom they also must liaise. By communicating with administrators about needs and expectations throughout the season, coaches put themselves in a good place with their program.
