Fun Volleyball Drills

Components of Fun Volleyball Drills fun volleyball drills

Athletes are looking for several things in fun volleyball drills, and coaches should do their best to include some of these aspects in daily practice. Fun volleyball drills are drills that let athletes learn without realizing it, that build camaraderie among teammates and those that show athletes quick results.

By combining a few of these elements, coaches can easily incorporate fun volleyball drills into their regular practice. Doing so will keep up athlete morale and improve behavior during practice.

Name It, Get It

In this drill, the focus is communication. Athletes should be scattered on one side of the court in a random pattern. The coach should start in the middle and throw the volleyball up, aiming it at no one. The person the ball comes to must yell “Mine!” and pass it to another player, saying their name while aiming the ball.

The person to whom the ball is going must yell “Mine!” and then set it to another player, saying their name as they aim it. Athletes must switch between setting and passing and must always say the name of the player to whom they are sending the ball.

This drill continues as long as the ball is in the air. If an athlete aims the ball wrong or the designated player is unable to reach it, they must yell “Not mine!” and another, closer player, must claim the ball. This way, the ball does not drop and athletes get practice adjusting their plans, as happens frequently in competition.

Musical Volleyball Drill

Musical volleyball is a youth volleyball drill that combines rapid-fire activity with the team’s favorite songs. Popular songs should be cut down to exactly one minute and compiled on a CD or musical player. Athletes should start by setting for one minute by themselves, using an overhead set and trying to keep the ball in the air for the entire minute.

When the first minute is over, athletes switch to passing, where they throw up a ball, pass it, and receive a ball from another player. The point of this minute is to pass as often as one can without getting hit by a volleyball coming their way. This will be somewhat chaotic but fun for everyone involved.

The next activity is serving. For the third minute, athletes should serve as many times as they can, working on making each serve successful. Athletes should practice different methods of serving, including the float serve and the jump serve.

At the end of the third minute, athletes should jog for one minute. Coaches can put however many minutes they choose on the drill and include other exercises as they like. This drill is both fun and useful because it combines popular music with frenzied activity and lots of learning about accuracy and consistency.

Final Thoughts...

Fun volleyball drills are all about letting athletes work without realizing it. These drills should help athletes connect with each other as well as practice important volleyball skills. The drills provided here give athletes a chance to enjoy themselves but combines it with healthy activity and a chance to practice accuracy and consistency, two extremely useful skills in volleyball.
