Hitting Drills for Volleyball

Hitting drills for volleyball are a great way to teach your players the fundamentals of the sport. They also make great warm-up exercises before a big game or tournament. We recommend the following drills for helping players hone their hitting skills.

Spiking Drills

Of all the various hitting drills for volleyball, spiking drills may be the most important. Spiking the ball is a surefire way of getting those much-needed points at the end of a difficult game.

  • Lead your players in the Reach and Snap drill. Have them practice snapping their wrist forward, and later have them add an arm swing to the movement. By focusing on using the power in the wrist while spiking, players will be able to reach higher and hit harder.
  • To teach the proper footwork for spiking, instruct players to approach the net from the back of the court. Once they reach the net, they should back up to the middle of the court and approach the net again. After players are able to move quickly during this drill, they can start jumping once they get to the net.

Passing Drills

Players need to be able to pass the ball accurately in order to execute plays with one another. These drills will help players learn to work as a team while passing.

  • Set up a 2-on-6 scrimmage. Although this may seem like an unfair game, it’s an extremely efficient way of teaching accurate passing skills. Players will be forced to anticipate the movement of the ball and read each others’ nonverbal cues very quickly during this drill.
  • Instruct players to form 2 lines facing one another. Space the lines about 10 feet apart and then have players bump the ball back and forth to each other. After a player hits the ball, she should then move to the end of the line, so that the lines are moving constantly throughout the drill.

Setting Drills

Setting moves prepare the ball to be spiked, so it is important that players to know how to set properly. The following techniques are designed to help players work on the movements involved during setting.

  • Arrange a game of scrimmage and assign one person to be the setter for both teams. Throw the ball to one team and allow the setter to run a play. After the third player taps the ball lightly over the net, the setter ducks under and joins the opposing team. The setter should complete as many plays as possible before the ball goes out of play.
  • Have players sit on the floor cross-legged in sets of two. Each team should sit close enough for their knees to be touching, and should then practice setting back and forth to one another. This drill teaches players good hand position while also helping them develop quickness and accuracy.

These basic hitting drills for volleyball are great to run with players of every age and experience level. They each emphasize speed, accuracy, and teamwork while also focusing on specific techniques and motions. Try them at your next practice to get your players on the road to success.
