Volleyball Team Drills
Volleyball team drills should involve as many people as possible on the team. However, these team drills do not only mean scrimmages, which is what most people think of when they hear team drills. Team drills can also be relays or rotations, requiring athletes to become familiar with many different play styles and rhythms.
The volleyball team drills provided here focus on teamwork, building a relationship on the court, and working together for success. They can be completed just once or can be repeated with players in different positions to allow for maximum benefit.
Pass, Set, Hit Relay
The coach should stand to one side of the court during this drill, ready to throw the ball up to the passer. The passer should pass to the setter, who sets for the hitter. The hitter is at the end line and should run up right at the last moment. The hitter hits the ball over the net and runs to replace the passer.
The passer then becomes the setter and a new hitter runs up from the end line. The setter joins the end line to eventually become a hitter. This drill utilizes all members of the team and exposes everyone to all positions.
When working on this drill, coaches should emphasize the necessity of working well together and communicating. The setter and the hitter particularly must be in synch during this drill, which can be difficult because the hitter is purposely at the end line until the last second. This requires the setter to choose the location the hitter must run to, taking into account how far the hitter must go and how likely they are to make a successful hit off the set. Circle Pass
The team joins together in a giant circle, spread evenly. The coach stands in the middle and throws the ball to a player, who must pass it to the person next to them. That player then passes to the player next to them, and the drill continues.
This drill is particularly difficult because players must aim for a very short distance. They must place the ball appropriately so their teammate next to them can receive the ball and pass it on. The team must work together to pass properly without letting the ball fall and without breaking the original circle.
This drill has a variation as well. Instead of passing around the circle in one direction, the passes can be like popcorn, going to whichever player the passer chooses. The difficulty in this drill is that players cannot move from the circle to retrieve the ball or keep it from hitting the ground.
Dig for Points
In this scrimmage, the last of the volleyball team drills provided here, one team always receives a ball from the coach. This drill is played like a regular game, with rally scoring. However, if the ball touches the ground without a block or dig touching it, the team that let it by loses a point. This drill is intended to teach the importance of digging and blocking properly and how it can turn a game around.
